SUSTAINABLE FURNITURE FOR A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE – HERE ARE A FEW TIPS FROM ASIS INDIA
The monsoon is now at its fag end and there is rejuvenated greenery all around us that fills us with happiness and tranquillity. And we have a duty, nay, a moral obligation, to our future generations, of preserving the beauty of nature for them! While we certainly must enjoy the fruits of our labour, it is the balancing act of ‘sustainable development & consumption’ that will help us achieve these two seemingly antipodal aims. Yes, sustainable consumption is not just possible, but is actually quite easy to inculcate if we follow the right practices. For example, we at ASIS Group have always been a vociferous proponent of looking after your furniture so as to ensure its long usable life and thus helping you reduce the ‘mean time between changing your furniture’. Have you read our previous blogs on the our previous blogs on the subjects of monsoon precautions for your furniture and of getting rid of mould and fungus from your furniture?
In this edition, we talk of ‘Green’ or Eco-friendly Furniture – what is it and how to find it! Nowadays, we see and hear a lot of talk about sustainable furniture and a large number of people making responsible choices about the products they put in their homes because it matters for the environment. But are all green furniture claims true? Not always, and there’s a term for that: greenwashing. So it’s important to know all the facts. Green / Eco-friendly / Sustainable furniture is furniture made using materials that have a minimal negative impact on the environment:-
- Uses materials that come from renewable sources.
- Process produces minimal chemicals that can pollute the environment.
- Prefers local material and manufacturing to save on transportation carbon footprint.

Finding sustainable furniture should start with a research. It is common for brands to claim their furniture is green or eco-friendly (the term for it is – Greenwashing), but many organizations now certify sustainable furniture materials. You may educate yourself about these certifications and what qualifies furniture as sustainable, and you’ll be able to make smart decisions regarding your furniture purchases. For example, our ASIS products are not just ISI and ISO 9001 certified for quality and process, and for their Anti-bacterial and Anti-viral properties, but also by Greenguard, IGBC and FSC. The Forest Stewardship Council (FSC), for example, certifies wood as sustainably harvested. Sustainable, responsible harvests ensure that the natural ecosystem remains in place and is able to maintain itself.
As a result, the forest continues to grow and produce wood. Tree farms and forests are examples of areas that qualify for certification.
